Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an acupuncture session last?

An initial treatment will take longer than a follow up treatment. During the initial treatment the acupuncturist will conduct a thorough medical intake and evaluation before administering treatment. Initial treatments take approximately 90 minutes. Follow up treatments are shorter, usually about 45 minutes to one hour.

Does acupuncture hurt?

No. Most people enjoy treatment and find it very comfortable, restful, and relaxing.  Generally sessions last about an hour, in which the patient rests or naps.  After treatment, you can expect to feel less pain, more energy, and a heightened sense of well-being.

Are the needles clean?

Absolutely! All acupuncture needles at the Natural Healing Center are sterile, single-use, disposable needles. They are never reused under any circumstances

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments necessary depends on the condition being treated. Recent injuries and conditions seen at an early stage will often improve immediately. Those conditions that have been present for longer periods may require more treatment.

For many disorders, symptoms reflect underlying conditions that may have to be treated beyond the point at which symptoms have improved. If treatments are stopped too quickly after symptoms begin to respond, the condition may eventually return. Nonetheless, a typical course of treatment for most painful conditions is about 6 - 12 treatments, at a frequency of about 1 - 2 treatments per week.

What about medication and other medical care?

Acupuncture may certainly be used in cooperation with other medical care. It is important to know what medication a patient is taking as this is taken into account in the planning and assessing of treatment. As acupuncture treatment progresses, the need for certain drugs may well decrease and it may be appropriate to reduce or discontinue medication, but this should be done only with the cooperation and approval of the prescribing doctor.

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

Completion of a massage intake form provides the basis for a conversation with the Massage Therapist about your unique situation. The therapist will discuss the information shared on the intake form and ask you general questions to determine if massage is appropriate for you, your expectations and to establish what areas you would like worked on and if there are any conditions needing to be addressed specifically. Your massage therapist may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition, and to learn more about any of your presenting complaints.

How will I feel after the massage therapy treatment?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.

Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage. Massage therapists sometimes recommend a hot Epsom salt bath that encourages the release of toxins that may have been stirred up from the massage treatment.

How often should I get a massage?

The answer to this question varies greatly. If you are working on a specific condition (injury, car accident, chronic illness etc) coming once a week for a period of time can be very helpful, then backing off to once or twice monthly for maintenance. If you are an athlete having a session before and after major events, as well as a part of your training program is recommended. Or if you are simply looking for relaxation, it is up to you.
